Kelly Preston opens up about the health conditions that led to her 16-year-old son’s death on the November 21 episode of The Doctors.
Kelly and John Travolta‘s son Jett died in 2009 after suffering a seizure and hitting his head in a bathtub at the family’s vacation home in the Bahamas. Kelly says that Jett had autism, and she attributes a series of contributing factors that led to his diagnosis.
“[Jett] was autistic. He had seizures and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki Syndrome,” Kelly shares.
“I strongly believe as a mother, as does my husband, that there are certain contributing factors that lead to autism and some of it is very much the chemicals in our environment and in our food,” she adds.
Kelly goes on to say there are a number of things responsible for Jett’s autism, specifically Kawasaki Syndrome – which typically affects children between 2 to 5 and can cause inflammation of the arteries.
She alsto attributes her “fast and hard” labor and the use of antibiotics while breastfeeding, which gave Jett thrush, an infection of Candida yeast which some studies have linked to the symptoms of autism.
The episode goes on to show a behind-the-scenes look at Alternative Laboratories to showcase how organic products are made. The actress, 50, hopes to empower parents to move toward an organic lifestyle and to use less chemicals.
Since Jett’s passing, the Travoltas – who are also parents to daughter Ella, 12 – have welcomed another son, Benjamin, now 2.
